Looking forward to a new year

We had a great time last night at Cornelia Street Cafe. What a pleasure it is to play with such great musicians. I’m looking forward now to my performances with the Seguine/Baker Jazz Orchestra and my duo show with Chris Pattishall in Ann Arbor, MI. Also, you should take a minute and visit my good friend, and great drummer, Andrew Hare’s blog (http://haredrums.blogspot.com/). He has great posts about legendary drummers and other jazz figures. He gives me a shout out in a recent post about Thelonious Monk.

I’m excited to be back on the grind and getting ready for this gig on November 16th. I’ll be debuting my new band, “Caleb Curtis & The Wheelhouse Band.” I’m very excited, the guys are GREAT players. It will be Duane Eubanks on trumpet, Mike Pinto on vibraphone, Dylan Shamat on bass and Shawn Baltazor on drums. It’s at the Brooklyn Lyceum, check out more details on the calendar. I’ve been busy this summer! Working hard with Manner Effect, including our Michigan tour, we’re checking off everything on the list so that we can get our CD out to all our fans and supporters. Also, I’ve moved back to Brooklyn, NY to the beautiful neighborhood of Prospect Lefferts Gardens and am making the most of it. It’s really nice to be back in the city full time. I’m working on my projects for the rest of this year including recording with Eric Burns’ Pointless Forest later this month, as we continue on the long road with that project. I’m excited to see what the rest of this year will bring, and way past that!

I’m excited to say that I’m graduating with my Master’s in Music degree from William Paterson University in the next couple of weeks. Here’s a video from my recent recital of an original composition:

Manner Effect will be going into the studio in a couple of weeks to record our record that was so generously funded by the public, we’re very excited.

Nearing the end of our Kickstarter campaign!

We’re in the final week of our Kickstarter campaign to raise money for Manner Effect’s debut CD & DVD. With only six days remaining we have raised over $7,000 in pledges from over 100 backers. To those of you that have already contributed or checked out the page we say “THANK YOU!” Your support is the only way we will be able to do this project. In order to receive the pledges we must make our goal of $8,000 in pledges by April 5th. If we don’t then none of the pledges will be processed and we won’t receive any funds to continue with our project. If you are unaware of our project and goals you can check out the kickstarter page for our band Manner Effect(http://kck.st/f0cpwU).

With your help we will be able to go into the studio and record, as well as complete many other important aspects of releasing a recording. If you haven’t yet pledged or this is the first you’re hearing about it, it would be great if you checked out the page and watched our music video (by Nico Curtis). If you’re feeling generous a pledge is appreciated but your support is valuable either way.

Also, my graduate recital is rapidly approaching, I’m excited about it and you can find details on the calendar page.

Jordan Piper recently released his debut CD “Colors” that I’m proud to be a part of, you can find me playing alto saxophone and flute on several of the tracks. Pick it up if you get a chance!

Kickstarter! and a new recording

If you head on over to the listen page you can check out a new recording of my song “Heavy Hangs the Head that Wears the Crown.” We recorded it last November and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Also my band Manner Effect (www.mannereffect.com) is raising funds so we can go into the studio and record our first record and live DVD. We’ve set up a page on Kickstarter.com full of great incentives and a new music video! Check out the video and, if you can, some help would be greatly appreciated.

All of a sudden it’s November and I have a couple of projects up and running and exciting performances. I’m leading a band again at Miles’ Cafe, but this time adding my friend Tony Lustig on baritone saxophone, paying tribute to Harry Nilsson’s The Point! at the Shrine in Harlem with a slew of collaborators and an 8 piece band, at the Metropolitan Room with our newly named band Manner Effect featuring Sarah Charles (Logan Thomas, Josh Davis, PJ Roberts) for a live concert recording, at Spike Hill in Brooklyn with Kenji Yoshitake’s Trio (a really fun band!), and with the William Paterson Jazz Orchestra featuring baseball legend Bernie Williams on guitar. Makes for a busy month, which is really great, and a couple of other projects in the works!

We had a great time on our trip to Philadelphia and to Michigan. Thank you to everyone that came out and supported the shows, it really means a lot to us. New site design, recording

I’m excited to get this new website design up, a big thank you to my talented brother Nico Curtis for designing it and for the photography. I will be refining it over the next few days but this is the idea. Also, I will be heading into the studio with Jordan Piper on Friday to record for his debut album, so watch out for it!
